Acronyms above, spelled out: AEGIS = the name of a 1997 secure-bootstrap architecture. TCPA = Trusted Computing Platform Alliance. TPM = Trusted Platform Module (the security chip). TCG = Trusted Computing Group (the standards body).

The honest controversy (hold both sides)

  • Critics (Cambridge's Ross Anderson; the Free Software Foundation, which called it "treacherous computing") warned the same chip that lets you verify a machine also lets a platform owner control what software you may run.
  • This dual-use tension never went away — it just moved to the cloud. An expert can argue both the security case and the civil-liberties case without strawmanning either.
